Once again, it looks like DePaul's season will be a roller coaster ride thanks to an undisciplined, yet very talented squad. They ran off to a 25-8 start tonight against Creighton before slowly melting down and losing 74-62. Remember the name P'Allen Stinett, as the Bluejays freshman guard scored 23 second half points in leading Creighton to a runaway victory. The lack of a point guard will haunt DePaul, as they committed 22 turnovers against Creighton's press and jacked up many bad shots in the second half.
A couple of big wins for mid-majors tonights. Belmont came into Cincinnati and UNC-Greensboro traveled to Georgia Tech victoriously, gaining key wins for their conferences in the hopes that they can earn an at large bid. (especially UNC-Greensboro coming out of the Southern conference, home to top mid-major Davidson and Stephen Curry).
A couple of intriguing scores to look at in March would be New Mexico State losing to Ohio and New Mexico getting a road win in Colorado. With the WAC likely being down this season, New Mexico State will not have much margin for error if they want to receive an at large bid. Meanwhile, a road win against a Big 12 team would be a nice little feather in UNM's cap, even if Colorado will likely finish at the bottom of the conference.
All the top 25 teams cruised tonight, with the highlight performance coming from Kansas State freshman Michael Beasley. A special talent who occasionally struggled with motivation in high school, Beasley looks to have really focused on becoming the dominant player that he's capable of being, with 32 points and 24 rebounds in his college debut.
