After a tremendous opener in Lexington, Kentucky officially laid an egg tonight in a 84-68 loss to Gardner Webb. To add insult to injury, Sporting News predicted Gardner Webb to finish 10th in the powerhouse Atlantic Sun conference. Kentucky shot an awful 35% from the field, and hit just 37% of their two point shots. I would advise getting Billy Gillispie a designated driver tonight, because this loss has to sting just two games into his Kentucky career.
UConn almost made it two awful losses, squeaking out a 69-65 win over Morgan State. Look for the Huskies to again struggle this season with their lack of a true point guard. By the time he makes it to Storrs, top Huskies point guard recruit Kemba Walker will be nicknamed the Savior.
In a quick recruiting note, North Carolina won the Tyler Zeller sweepstakes. A consensus top 20 prospect, Zeller chose the Tar Heels over Purdue and Indiana. Despite having some noted recruiting losses this season (Delvon Roe, Samardo Samuels, Al-Farouq Aminu, Iman Shumpert), North Carolina still has an excellent class coming in with Zeller, fellow top 20 prospect Ed Davis and top 100 guard Larry Drew.
